Description
This image features a patriotic poem titled "Red, White, and Blue" that someone wrote into the book pages. It is a simple poem that the writer obviously took their time to write, drawing lines on the page so their writing would be straight and scribbling out sections that just weren't good enough. It is too bad that there wasn't a name to accompany this poem but it can tell us quite a few things about the author and what they loved. Their handwriting is messy, perhaps they are not highly educated since the children of this period who were has highly stylized, artful handwriting. The writing also seems less sure towards the bottom of the page, maybe they were balancing this book on their lap while they scribbled away in it or they were rushed towards the end. A paratext like this is incredibly rich for the imagination and what is can tell us about reader, and in this case, writers!
