Reader Culture in Paratexts

Why do we read books? Why do we embrace these packets of paper and hold them so dear- to the point where entire fields of study are devoted to better understanding them, as well as many professions centered on the creation and maintenance of books. Not to mention that there are thousands of buildings around the world whose sole purposes are to house books where people can go to enjoy them and most people have their own collections at home. Books can teach us about the world around us or help us to escape it completely and for those reasons they have been a major part of most people’s lives since childhood. This exhibit looks at scribbles, bookmarks, and inscriptions in children’s books in order to see how children have interacted with books over the years and how reader culture has changed through time.
